It may be “late”, but the Free as a Human story is an important one to tell.
Free as a human is a rally to end the sexual exploitation of young girls, the use of child labour and the enslavement of humankind. Founded in 2018 by Anyango Mpinga, a fashion designer and social activist, the fashion initiative’s aim is to combat human trafficking and raise awareness against the social and economic injustices that occur within the fashion industry.
Forced labour has been an issue in the fashion industry for years. For example, child labourers are used within the fashion supply chain to make garments worn by people all over the world, and cotton pickers work in enslaving conditions. Through Free as a human, Anyango raises funds and supports HAART Kenya; a Kenyan non-governmental organization dedicated to ending human trafficking. This has been done successfully through the sale of a limited range of branded merchandise.
The branded merchandise includes T-shirts, bags and stationery. 100% of the profits made through this go towards running of a shelter for female victims of trafficking. Partners of the movement have been:
RA International: one of Africa’s leading remote site service providers.
Sandstorm Kenya: a popular brand that makes luxury bags.
Anyango Mpinga by itself is a brand known for producing contemporary slow fashion that advocates for sustainable manufacturing practices. This means that a transparent supply chain that ensures workers work under safe conditions and are paid fairly is enforced.
This artistic endeavor is extremely important for our immediate society and the global community.
